CLASSICAL ON CUBA

Classical on Cuba is an annual weekend festival that showcases and celebrates the intersection of classical music and contemporary Cuba Street culture. For two days, the venues of Cuba Street and it’s surrounds are peppered with diverse musicians and performance artists playing their take on the classical genre.

Here, classical players come together with hip hop artists, jazz musicians, taonga pÅ«oro powerhouses, opera divas, drag performers, theatre actors and contemporary dancers to make one exciting lineup of acts to choose from on a classical crawl through the weekend. With it’s fresh approach, Classical on Cuba forges new paths for audiences and classical musicians alike.

Classical on Cuba was born out of the challenges of the Covid lockdown in 2020, when Creative Capital Arts Trust and Orchestra Wellington joined forces with passionate musicians to support the Cuba Street businesses affected by the cancelled CubaDupa festival. The successful partnership led to the festival’s triumphant return in 2021, with successful runs again in 2022 and 2023.

We have big plans for the evolution of this festival: it's the only one of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere and the potential to grow is huge. Head to our website below to find out more and sign up to our newsletter for updates on any exciting developments.
